Re: RFID library HF security gate

I agree with GaryGreen. I think that current systems are good for registration where people want to have the tags read. But, these systems don't work for anti-theft where the patrons are trying to avoid being read at the entry/exit points that have readers.

The problem of security can be either one of controlled access or continuous visibility. The controlled access model where one tries to read a tagged asset at an entry/exit point is difficult to enforce without active monitoring. Consider airport metal detectors. These would be much less effective if there were no guards standing there to make certain that people don't just throw their metal around the detection gate to avoid detection. So these controlled access systems require active monitoring or they are pretty much useless.

The other model is a little more effective but much more difficult to setup since it requires more infrastructure. Consider a model where ID's are detected periodically. When one goes missing for a set period of time, then an alert is raised with the last detected location of the ID. If the ID becomes visible again, then the alarm should be cleared. This system would tell when an asset went missing, but there would be a time delay that would probably not allow corrective action. This is the model that is used in expensive asset control. However, until the cost of readers and antennas significantly drop, then the infrastructure costs would probably not be worth it for a library of standard books.

    Sorry,

Extending dbell's comments about active beaconing tags for library security::
A major university library in our state has an active RFID security system installed in one of their rare and high-value research areas -- essentially irreplacable pre-Rennaisance manuscripts..
Even then someone apparently cut pages -- mostly old maps -- from the documents [probably with a razor blade] and sold the stuff on eBay. They still don't know everything that was stolen since no one actually knew what the books contained originally.....
So RFID security systems have a very long way to go before one could consider them to actually work for their intended purpose.... So if you're looking for an effective security system, make sure you do the complete system engineering including psychology and not just rely on some technology salesman and his snake oil....
