    RFiD in Corrections

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department houses over 18, 000 inmates on any given day. Needless to say it is the largest county jail system in the free world. The amount of inmate movement is overwhelming and keeping track of inmate movement is huge. I'm throwing feelers out to the world of RFiD to see how this technology can accomplish this task.

These inmate are housed in 9 seperate jail facilities within the County of Los Angeles. My research has come up with very little RFID in corrections, particularly with active tags. Any suggestions??? Where would be a good place to look????

    Hi,
Here are a couple of things that you should look at.

This is old from Dec 2002.
The first one talks about GE working with Alanco.
"Alanco Technologies (NASDAQ: ALAN) said yesterday that it has agreed to work with GE Public Finance to provide special lease financing deals for the TSI PRISM RFID tracking systems for prison security management. PRISM was developed by Alanco subsidiary Technology Systems International of Scottsdale, Ariz.

With the PRISM system, inmates wear miniature RFID transmitters in a tamper-proof wristband. Guards also wear a transmitter with a "man down" button. Each transmitter broadcasts a signal every two seconds to readers throughout a prison".

The next one is older Jul 2002.
"Tracking prisoners hasn't evolved much since the invention of leg irons. But RFID may change that. Technology Systems International Inc. (TSI), a subsidiary of Alanco Technologies Inc., has signed a $3 million contract to install its inmate tracking system at an undisclosed prison in the Midwest".

    Hope this helps,

    Thanks Bob,

We are currently working with TSI, (Alanco). I've been to the prison in Illinois were they have the system installed. To justify a sole source procurement, I needed to know if there were any other prison or jails using RFID technology to track inmates in real time.

    Thanks again.

    Hi,
I don't know what you might have in that area but here are a few more that I found.

The committee is considering whether to outfit the new Jefferson City Correctional Center with the technology. It directed the Department of Corrections to solicit bids on installing it. Alanco has installed the technology in prisons in California, Illinois and Michigan and is constructing systems in Florida and Ohio prisons.
